Listening to every heart

After You Ascended

You did not rise rapidly.
You took your time, stayed a bit
touching shoulders, looking over us
as we prayed our goodbyes.

My lips haven’t touched
KJ Chardonnay, nor my
sourdough bread, nor your
heartier cheeses and tangy fruits
since a year ago, this week.

Some things just lost their flavor
when your laughter was silenced.

Maybe it was a few weeks, nay
months following the eulogy,
when flowers were scattered by
September winds, that hearts and minds
weren’t surrounding you 24/7.

Maybe. Hard to think that way,
but life has a way of interfering
with grief, getting in the way like that.
When the sun blinked gold in October,
one wondered how to get through
the next year without scrabbling over
memories.

After you ascended,
you kept your hand in the mix, somehow,
and if anyone could get Him to agree in
levity, your wink and smile could’ve
done just that.

So come September 3, it will
be time for me to open a bottle of
KJ Chardonnay…
take a sip in your ever-lovin’ honor,
then write a poem for the blessings
you left behind,
minding my line breaks.

~*~

"When the sun blinked gold in October,

the next year without scrabbling over
memories."

This entire poem is absolutely beautiful.
But, this line pulls it all together.

Your heart, dear Karilea, communicates so beautifully with your friend Louise.

She will be there sipping Chardonnay with you ...

Hugs.

I didn't know the lady, but I'll raise a toast in her honor with some cheap California burgundy with you on the 3rd, already have it marked so I don't forget.

Karilea...Great tribute to Bridget she was a very tender fine person. She always had something possitive to say and I really enjoyed her poetry...Paul

Beautiful, my friend, and can relate on several levels with two who have ascended ...
my grandmother first and foremost, and my best friend...

Enjoyed all the reads I've made of this...

My dear friends,

As August leafs it way into September,
I want to thank you all for touching
upon this poem. It means so much to me
that we gather around to comfort one
another over any loss...and that we take
a moment to honor our poets, past and
present.

Bridget is smiling, as am I.

Love,

Karilea

What a beautiful tribute.
I remember Bridget, I had several conversations with her in private e-mail. I hadn't realized she had passed through the crack that seperates the the two worlds.
I was gone from here too long..:-(
Thank you K, for this poem.

I agree with JL, this is a brilliant line that acts as both marker and psalm. Thank you for reminding us.
