SOMALIA NEEDS US ALL
13 August 2011

Somalia,
South Africa aches for you
and your emaciated people
especially the children.
You will know that from the visits
of  The Gift of the Giver volunteers
who say that the devastation
is so much worse than Japan’s tsunami’s
and from the corporations who have contributed gifts
of hundreds of thousands of rands
and the little people
who gave their ten rands via SMS.
I could only give you ten rand
because the money I have is not mine
until I have paid my debt to my animals’ vets
but I know they won’t mind waiting
just ten rand more.
I know also that there are thousands of us
who could/would only give you ten rand,
but ten thousand ten rands
means a hundred thousand rand
and even one little ten rand
could mean an injection
that saves one desperate little life
so I know you will appreciate my meagre gift
of ten rand
and tears
and fervent prayers
and an attempt
to encourage my colleagues
to do the same.
May God inspire
many to do all they can
for you and your people
and may your people stop the fighting
and may they weather the famine
and may the rains come
and may your people begin the healing
and the planting
and the prosperity.

Diana,  We must never forget that each of us has a special gift or talent that is desperately needed, that each of can play a part in our common human enterprise.

You are heard, Diana.  May all those rands reach those who need them the most.  Giving friend, I love your heart.

Absolutely, Daddy Goose!  Many of the truly greats were unknown and unprivileged to say the least - Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandela come to mind.  Thank you for reading and commenting.

Thank you, Alison.  I can't even watch the images of Somalia on TV.  I turn off the TV because it is unbearable.  A local TV presenter managed to do what she had her coping with what she did for the week she was there, but just one more mother carrying her dead seven-year old on the last day she was there, had her sitting on the kerb, sobbing.  My gift was miniscule, but many miniscule gifts add up.

Amen!

Your prayer poem touches the heart, dear Diana!

So many situations that call for men's "human intervention"!

Love and peace.

Thank you, my dear friend, Margherita.  You are so right - so many ways in which we can help, in however small a way.

I hope so, eg, I hope so.  I am not strong enough to be able to bear thinking of their plight, let alone describe the visuals or tell the stories.  South Africa en masse has sent a huge amount of money to Somalia via a very reputable means - Morning Live, a program on TV every morning - and an organisation here, Gift of the Givers have been to Somalia twice for a week at a time, with volunteer doctors, nurses, and similar and journalists and medicines and I forget the number of tons of food.  However, Somalia needs so much more from all corners of the world.  They also need everyone's prayers for the famine, the violence, the crime, the corruption and the despotism to end.  Please will all who pray, pray for them.
