her voice reverberates in the huge room
and she tries
without success
to gain control of her breath
which has become erratic
to say the least
the man behind the desk rises
oh, dear, she wishes he hadn't done that
her eyes
her honest eyes
looks unashamedly at his crotch
he is smiling
hands outstretched
speaking words she cannot hear
for the ringing in her ears
if he only knew why she was here
here in this great hall
where her own familiar voice
echoes her lies back into her face
he excuses himself
be back in a sec, he says, and leaves
she quickly goes to his desk
begins to go through all the drawers
unlocked
of course they were unlocked
he had nothing to fear from her
she was just another person
answering that ad in the paper
for an administrative assistant
(meaning secretary)
she roots around some more in the drawers
then rummages through them in reverse order
silently hissing
for finding nothing
at least nothing she could hold up
shove it in his face
and say . . .
she had things though
in her little shoulder purse
that would rock his world
when he came back she could have all the proof
and that's what it was
proof
tears filled her eyes
thinking of the scene she could cause
a hand went, (involuntarily)
toward the shoulder purse
she stopped it with her other hand
closed all the drawers
leaned down and smelled the back of the chair
he sat in
would remember that smell until
the day she died
she quickly wrote something
on his memo pad
straightened her back
walked out of the room
back to the tenement
with all its cement and sidewalks
here even a stick won't write her name*

Christine Tsen is indeed a talented musician and poet.
Way above my pay grade.  You do a good job here my friend.
But my slow old brain has to read and reread.

It isn't your fault, JL, I tried to make the poem a bit surreal and mysterious. Thank you for stopping by.
