knee deep is the fog
hugging the ground
half-shrouding the tombstones
gray skies
heavy with the wrath of the season
huge birds
black against the moldy sky
circling o'er the graves
surreal are my thoughts
reality my bane
the shrieks of the birds
become louder
more unrelenting
I stop
look down at my feet
I cannot see them
they feel wet
the fog
has creept toward my chest
and the birds
the enormous, immense birds
circling
cawing, shrieking loudly
unnerving me to the point
I begin to sob
tears come
whether I want them to
or not
how long I stood there
afraid
crying like a little girl
I don’t know
but I had to keep going
so
I adjusted the sack upon my hip
not wanting to think
about what was inside it
and where I had to go
to do what I had to do
sssh
it is so quiet now
the hateful birds have stopped
their screeching
still
I hear something worse
voices
muffled voices
oh my, oh me
I begin to walk again
the fog now almost up to my neck
it has become so dense
it is very hard
for me to put one foot in front of the other
I know, however I must keep moving
my, my
how did I get into this mess
the blasted fog
the dreadful, shrieking birds
but most of all
the sack
and now voices
I decide to stand as still as I can
as quietly as I can
the voices grow dim
dimmer still
until I cannot hear them
good
I readjust the sack on my hip
I have a ways to go
before I can turn it loose

Ah, the sack . . . Who knows, there may be another episode of "The Journey."

Thank you, Lori.
