Thibodaux has no claim to fame,
Though Hank Williams sang her by name.
A Cajun town with wealth untold,
And strange tales of Marie Laveau.

Pirates’ booty is still searched for,
You never know what washed ashore.
Cajun’s blood runs with a wild roux,
Down here in the swamps and bayous.

And of course we have Jean Lafitte,
Pirate bold you’d not want to meet.
Plundered ships looking for booty,
Made his home base here near the sea.

Oil and gas, a mainstay down here,
On hard times by the puppeteer.
Shrimp and oysters, seen better days,
Because once the gulf was ablaze.

Still, Cajuns are a hardy lot,
To admit defeat they will not.
Although at times we’re in dismay,
We sing, Laissez les bon temps rouler.*

*Laissez les bon temps rouler
means “let the good times roll.”

Hardy, indeed.  You all have sure been through it down there...  It's good they have you down there to help keep their spirits up.

Nice to see your lighter side.

Thanks, Michael, I need to overcome my problem by forgetting about it, and I can do that, Mind over matter. It works if you try hard enough.

Great write!
How well I remember Thibodaux, Morgan City, and Grand Isle.
I was stationed on the USCGC Pt Sal at Grand Isle.
Love the people: “Let the good times roll”
And they do...
Me being from Texas though I was a bit confused on the spelling and pronunciation of some of the names of people and places.

South Louisiana, ebonygirl, has a mystic all it's own. It is a place where people prefer having fun over most anything. It's a culture thing.

Jerry, it is lovely to read of somebody who loves where they live.  The swamps and bayous must be teeming with birdlife and all sorts of other interesting creatures.  Enjoyed the snapshot of your corner of the world.

Thanks, Owl, and you are right, I do love it here in Thibodaux. Right again on the wildlife, from egrets to alligators, and one strange little guy called nutria.

I've always wanted to visit the Bayou and your poem has convienced me that someday I must. I really enjoyed this poem Jerry. "Let the good times roll." Indeed! And roll and roll.

Thank you, Marcia. Yes, if one wants to see and experience history in the eyes of the Cajuns of south Louisiana, there are many ways to do it down here . . . Thank you for being here.
