Behind this mask of happiness

is the pain that I've hidden so well.

A complicated second lifestyle,

that's an amalgamation of moments of hell.

Distorted realities that tear and rend

at my heart and my very soul;

to leave me feeble and incapacitated,

seems to be their only goal.

The abrupt appearance of happiness,

is a temporary and brief respite;

it dissolves into an all-encompassing bleakness

that is so much darker than night.

Is this a temporal aspiration of love

destined to try to ease my pain,

or just another fleeting moment,

to help fill up my cup with disdain?

Maybe a thoughtful apparition of hope,

to lead me from a darkness without light;

carefully enfolded in the loving arms

of someone who will give me delight.

To dispel the heartache and hopelessness

and to show me what true love can be.

With a smile that radiates pure happiness

you finally came and set my heart free

It's amazing how tortuous a mask can be... and yet, this is something we do to ourselves.  One must be careful no to lose themselves while donning said mask as well.  In the end, one has to question if it's really worth it.

Nicely done.

Get out of my head...that hit way too close to home! That would make it a 10 in my books.

Fine writing, glad it all ended well. Masks sure are of various kind, some we wear for ourselves and the others we wear for people around us.

I don't think that stuck is the right word:
desire, want, need, just like the air I breath, you are a requirement.

I've always liked the song "Tears of a Clown" and know well you can wear a smile but not feel it. I love the happy ending you've written here! *S*

I've learned to let all see the turmoil as well as the happiness.
