Surmised

So here I go again, another fatalistic venture.
It’s in the eyes; there is no other realistic censure.
For though I understand need of a diplomatic forum,
I realize too often love undermines drab decorum.
So while I bury my trust in the time-honored tradition,
And blot from eye such flagrant sin, if not of my volition;
Hell hath no fury, one has learned, if merely through suggestion
To dignify feeling this burned by one unanswered question.

And so I stammer on, unfazed by gawky presentation.
The demeanor of a man crazed, I hold no reservation,
And drop the hammer casually where most would least suspect it.
All the candor I’ve held duly, where I could least protect it.
To offer up what chance denies, in solemn benediction,
With distant longing on the eyes whispering of affliction.
The palsied cup offered to me, I glimpse beyond what’s broken,
And cling so strong to the surmise of all that’s left unspoken.

That shattered thought I once held dear, even as hope abated;
That truth might somehow bring you near, rightly delineated.
It matters not that I stood firm where history compelled me,
The end has come sure as the worm, (for clarity has failed me),
That hollows out the skull of one who never stilled the notion
That life would lack all relevance if willed without emotion.
Take no account of dream undone, or one last unhindered cry
That could not crack the elegance of a yet unanswered “why?”

Michael Anderson

Like one that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And having once turned round walks on,
And turns no more his head...

These lines and the last two really resonate in me... for many years and shed of tears haven't brought me any closer to an answer. The question burns less intensely but is still there... though most of the time, I'm willing to admit I might not want to know the answer... or know it already. *S*

But the emotion read and remembered is only half the equation... your rhyme is sheer perfection! *S*

Denial tends to be my strongsuit at times also, Ruth.  The truly sad thing is I know this and am okay with it  :P
