COMA (Pulling the plug)

For months I lay in timeless thought, my solemn benediction.
The price of pain and passions wrought – segregated affliction.
The truth an echo of the past, the past merely distortion…
A noose on neck held to the last of life’s ruthless contortion.

You never really can be sure just what it is you’re seeing
With all you feel surely obscured by shadows of your being,
As all the hope that you once held for positive prognosis
Slips down the slope of shame, impelled by some silent osmosis.

Awareness to the outside world, though ripened, appears stunted.
In fairness to karma unfurled, the hunter becomes hunted.
Perception keen, I note the change in the surrounding voices;
Faces unseen, by virtue’s strange, I can foresee their choices.

But she hears not, although I scream, as if I were in stasis,
And bleed as shot the last of dream no longer found with basis.
A reaching hand, drawn like a veil that shadows my existence
Severs the band of love so frail, it wholly missed my resistance.

The plug, ‘been pulled so near the end of this misguided sailing,
Leaves no one fooled alas, my friend, but stands the price for failing.
A flash in eye, the image spans the spectrum of my vision…
Still, I would die a lesser man not having gone to prison.

Where, reaching out while none pay heed to a face now forgotten,
Bypassing doubt on fields that bleed hope from the misbegotten;
I but hold true to God above, in spite of such derision,
And hold for you silenced, my love, in light of your decision.

Like one that on a lonesome road
Doth walk in fear and dread,
And having once turned round walks on,
And turns no more his head...

quote:
I but hold true to God above, in spite of such derision,
And hold for you silenced, my love, in light of your decision.

'Tis a hard decision, to be sure,
but my dear friend, 'twas to ease your
suffering in whole and in heart
that you didn't suffer longer over all.

You remain in my prayers.

Beautifully done, Michael. Love the title. Love the in-depth wordplay you found yourself in as you wrote this poem. Hang in there. Life is good ever-more. Make of it what you will.

K, I thank you for your prayers.  I'm not sure the suffering ever really eases, more than you just learn to accept it cases like this.  Either way, I do still have the strength to smile and exercise it.

Jerry, Indeed, life is good.  And it is also what we make of it.  Here's to clearer vision and better choices!

I'm an avid reader and sometimes find myself fascinated by titles. *S* I think the one that's touched me most profoundly is Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream"... I feel the grip of total helplessness every time I see those words. This poem and particularly the quote above give me the same feeling of falling into a void, scream echoing in my head - unvoiced, unheard.

I but hold true to God above

Ultimately, that's the greatest possible epitaph... whether for a life or a relationship.

Please forgive my wandering mind... Your powerful words set me thinking... and that's dangerous for a blonde, yanno. *G*
