grandma knitted daddy a sweater with three arms
said it was a place for god to reach in
and give a helping hand during picking time

momma used to hang it out public every spring
just as a reminder that no one was helpless
if someone else brings them some helpful

daddy died of the cancer in his belly in june
pastor said god had reached down and took him
before his time, but the pickin still needed done

momma cut the arm off that sweater in july
sewed it up for me to wear next winter
made a coat for the baby pig from that sleeve

we had him as ham at christmas but didn't say grace

This of course touches me in places
you didn't even intend that it should...

Thanks, D.

Oh, my, but this is incredibly intense!

... and it reminded me of my poor rabbit Ruedi whom I loved (the only one with whom I had established a friendship and who let me caress him) and who ended up on the table ... a horrible thing in my eyes that made me hate my stepfather at the time. The rabbit (Belgian Giant) had been a champion and my stepfather said he was too old then for exhibitions ... so he was still good enough to be eaten. I realize now that this wound is not healed at all!

See what your haunting poem did to me?

Love,
Margherita
