there is sun behind your eyes this morning
like a fire left over from love
one you keep around for the animals
lest they feed on your fragile then
when you are sleeping your dreams away

you spilled whiskey on my leather again
drew circles around my tattoos with glances
and then kissed them as if they were salty
I heard your belly sound kitten purr
then your panther was wickedly attentive

you clawed at my yesterday memories slowly
as if each one was something to repossess
and you wanted to mark them over with paint
that was brushed into your name shapes
and I had to speak them into recitals

there is night behind your eyes this morning
like a fire started over for love
one you keep around to attract this animal
that feeds on your fragile when
you are unable to sleep through your dreams

and you hate all the ways I can wake you
