And I would talk to him with my nervous tick.
Rubbing tiny sand covered fingers through  my greasy hair.

His One coat, one shirt, one pants and that smell.
God, what was that Dirt?  I have loved dirt ever since.

And he was mute with eyes that screamed.
Though sometimes crusty.

There were times that I would give my life to wipe them with my spitted thumb but never.

And in his royal court.  that nasty curb my toes in the gutter.
I would chatter to him endlessly.  To the sneers of the well suited passing by.

And I would tell him things I wouldn't whisper to the wind in the dark.....

My heart aches for you both, but I am glad you found him, as much for the dumpster teddy bear as for you - I adore every teddy bear that ever saw (or didn't see) the light of day and that is why I understand how much the little darling meant to you.  Loved the poem too, of course, despite the aching.

Bumping this up exquisite poem up to the top.

Those eyes that scream get me every one of the many times I have read this.

...and I must bring it to the top, too. How beloved are teddy bears, and they carry the weight of the world without a word.  The heartspeak is so powerful in your commiseration.

Recently I had tea with a friend at McDonald's.  While we were there a group of mentally handicapped people came in, among them a girl of maybe 16.  She was hugging a furry brown toy, a monkey, alternately tossing it into the air and clutching it with fierce devotion when it came down again.  She gleefully went into the men's restroom and then in a moment made her way into the women's. On her way out she stopped at my table.  Laughing, she held the monkeys grubby hand out to me and said, "Shake!"  She chattered happily at me, but most of what she said was unintelligible. The monkey was missing one eye, had gone bald in places, was patched with yellow twine, and was gray with dirt.  From behind me,someone suddenly screamed at the girl to leave me alone.  She smiled, gleefully hugged the monkey to her heart and bounced back up to the front counter. Eyes welling, I returned to tea with my friend, grateful beyond words for that child's best friend.

I am very touched by Klassy Lassy's beautiful account of the girl and the toy monkey, and it had me in empathetic tears.

Another excellent poem from you. Isn't it strange how those button eyes can be so infinitely expressive? It's because we have talked them into life.

Welcome to Pip!

Love,
Margherita
