It was a hot summer day
Dark-thirty
I was trying my luck fishing
In a Louisiana coastal town
They sat on the same rock jetty
I was fishing from
But not so near
She was young
Maybe twenty-something
He middle-aged or more
She sat on his lap looking toward the sea
Leaned in its direction
As if she might want to leave
One of his hands clasped her waist
The surge from the gulf
Made the water assault the jetty
Drowning out their conversation
Of this May-December
Interlude
I turned my attention back to
Catching fish
Couldn't concentrate, however
The couple captivated me
That they were lovers
Was apparent
Still . . .
Something seemed curious
About them
As I watched them I felt
Like a Peeping Tom
But I couldn't stop staring
They paid me no mind
As though I wasn't even there
What was strange about them
I soon figured out
The woman
She wasn't sitting on his lap
No, it was more like
He was holding her there
She hadn't moved
Since the first time I saw her
Her back against his chest, head drooped
Something gave me chills
As hot as it was that day
The man turned his head
Stared back at me in the dusk
Said something I couldn't make out
He quickly stood
Still holding onto the woman
That was when I saw
The handle of the dagger
Which had been plunged into her stomach
And the blood
All . . . that . . . blood, dried now
Still staring at me
The man pulled the knife out of her
Pushed her into the sea
And
Still looking at me
Put the bloody knife to his throat
And sliced his jugular vein
Falling into the water with the woman
