I hope I haven't posted this before. I did a search and couldn't find it.

<><><><>

she's listening to Elvis
(who else?)
cocks an eye over at me
says
he could have every woman in the world
but I could make him happy
I say, he's a fag
she said something I didn't catch
cause she turned the volume up
so I shut up
summer vacation from school
she's my girl this year
we do it sometimes
she's afraid of making a baby
so she helps me out in other ways
about the baby
I'm afraid too
though not as much as her
I don't think
so hot this summer
even in the shade
even in the morning shade
couple of guys came by
eying her
saying they just wanted to hang out
she turned down Elvis
smiled and sat up all cheerful
like I said
she's my girlfriend this year
but she's not acting like it
one of the guys had a softball
she jumped up
he threw it to her
the other guy got involved
I watched
how she flirted
then cut those dark eyes over to me
I'm confused about love
if that's what she and I have
we say, I love you
to each other
somehow I imagined love to be something else
not playing catch with the guys
jiggling everything for them
to see
nothing is permanent
I'm learning that in school
though they don't teach it
we tell each other we're in love
because that's what we're supposed to do
we're teenagers
I really wanted to play ball with them
but I felt it'd spoil it for her
in a way I hate to see them quit playing
afraid she'll
walk away with them

As good as Bukowski would write about the era..this poem had me thinking of how good he wrote about the gritty parts of life..
I like him because of that, and also like your poetry because of that.

You put me in some pretty darn good company, Ice, and I thank you for that.

JerryPat,
On the sidelines of love, ain't we all been there watching the game, not sure who's going home, or with whom. Nice write.

Yep, we sure all have been there, Doc. And it doesn't ever seem to get any easier even as we age. There is that ache in the chest area that just about want to cleave through your skin.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey, summer 1956 was when I was born! Anyway, your poem speaks to everyone of all ages when it comes to love. We all have to figure out the rules to play. Enjoyed!

Haha! I agree, Kat , even when there are no rules like when we were teenagers. Appreciate you stopping by and commenting.

Jerry this is exceptional...the truth is brutal as love can be. Very well done my friend

Yes, Lori, love can and is brutal in many cases. But how would we cope, and what would be do without it? Thank you for being here.

I was 12 in 1956. This conveys that time period very well.

This reminds me of Bukowski's writing, just as I saw someone else say. It's honest.. Great read!

Amber, as I said to Ice, putting my name in the same sentence with Bukowski's is exciting and fulfilling, and I appreciate the fact that you have one so. Thank you for being here.
