Housework makes you ugly!
Is painted on the heart
glued to the front of
a painted wooden girl
with five gingham tied braids
of unraveled twine
sticking straight
out out of her head
She has a gingham dress
with matching bow
and light blue sleeves
her little shoes painted black
Her smile
is sweetly dimpled
her cheeks are freckled too
And those innocent
round eyes
with three big lashes
just made for batting
are really quite convincing
She hangs in my kitchen
where passersby can see her
clearly amongst the clutter
and nod knowingly
at my beauty secret
And from the looks of
this place on some days...
I would think
I should be
drop dead gorgeous!

You are, you are, there is no doubt, and nothing can change that, not even housework.

This was cute, dear Lori.

I think ... well, housework can keep us fit, but probably we prefer to go to gym or swim etc.

But in a way your theory is true, housework can be depressing (because of the daily repetition!) and a depression isn't exactly "beauty-enhancing".

Love,
Margherita

Margherita and dear Deer, you are much too kind and I'm sure the house was a total wreck the day that picture was taken.

This is very cute and clever, Lori. I was going to clean the kitchen but aw, forget it.

What a well-constructed poem about the most mundane thing . . . Housework. Like Sunshine said, it is the monotonous, everyday thing that starts getting to you. The same goes true for a lot of jobs. I'm in Balladeer's corner with the Drop Dead Gorgeous part.

I can never keep up with the dishes in my kitchen.  Two minutes after I've finished washing them, someone finds something to eat or drink and the counter gets cluttered again.  I learned early on in my marriage that I'd never win, and I bought a little breadboard with a poem on it that reads:

Thank God for dirty dishes
for they have a tale to tell,
while others may go hungry,
we're still eating well.
With health and home and happiness,
we surely shouldn't fuss,
for by the stack of evidence
God's been very good to us!
  (anonymous)

It's been in my kitchen for 33 years. My husband said, "I suppose you think God puts the food on the table."  I laughed at him and told him "Yeah! but if you take that plaque down, I'll put up another one that says, "My husband is the boss in this household and he has permission of the management to say so."  The breadboard is still there.

Lori, Your poem makes me smile... and remember.  Cute.
