.

If you were next door
I would visit you

Gladly come over
To borrow some sugar
Spend an hour or two
With nothing better to do
Raking your autumn lawn

If you were
Across the street
We could congregate
See what verbs
We might then conjugate
Develop new words
By which to celebrate
In collaboration
Tongue to tongue

But being as you’re on
The other side of town
With all those grown
Children still at home
It makes things
Far less halcyon
Than they might
Have been before

So perhaps
I’ll call you
On the cell
When I’m not busy
With other chores

Chat about weather
The passing
Of another year

And neither us
Nineteen anymore

.

This so understated that it is chilling. I understand completely.

This has great impact, dear John. It is in a way haunting ...
