I wanted to write of elephants today
under the gray of seashell ears
whipped around and tossed in the air
by a curious trunk

But the sky changed
and turned a mellow marshmallow
and melted it while I watched
my eyes stabbed by the forked sun

I thought I'd already caught the glade
how its grasses are spiked and blown dry
as the waters that were drowning tree legs
now hold the wasted treasures of man
who fished and missed and left pieces behind

Tokens that held the thought of the day
with a beer can and plastic fork
caught in the briar of fishing line and lures
held to the moss and mosquitos of time
stirred into a pot of missed opportunity

I wanted to walk into a green spring day
and blossom a flower and see the wheat grass
play in the empty nests of sunshine and feathers
blessed be the warm ground and all

and I did

. . . as long as you did, Martie, everything is right with the world. Your day was certainly different, mine was hectic.  How does a guy who lives alone have a hectic day? Don't ask.

"held to the moss and mosquitos of time
stirred into a pot of missed opportunity"

I believe moss and mosquitoes would be a good base for a pot of south Louisiana gumbo. I'm in for it. Gotta love it!

Martie, you walked into a spring day with your nature eyes and sunshine heart and warmed and enhanced everyone else’s day in the doing of it.

Please write of elephants one day, with your Martie-pen, but free elephants wandering the plains of my beloved Africa.  They (and I and everyone else) would bless you for your beautiful words, as we do for all your writings.

Sissie...

this was a child's captivated world with
all of the mysteries that a child's eyes
behold...and then some.

And then it was adult in its reality, and
mystery in what we cannot contain nor cure...
let alone fix it.

And then...it was, to borrow from a southerner
we know and love...just magick!

It's a , darlin'!

Jerry....hectic happens in the wind tunnel of the mind, I guess, or from eating too much gumbo.  Thanks for stopping by for my California day stew.

Hi James...thanks for the read

Diana....The elephants were clouds and I took the circus out of them for you.  If I warmed your day, I'm happy!

Sissie...of course you knew where I was going with this, you went with me.

Ida...what a lovely thing to say...thanking you, I do!

Thank you, Martie, for taking the circus out of the elephants for me.  Smiling.  I love that they were clouds.

Yes, you always warm my day with your poetry, but when it is sad poetry, then it is a different kind of warming - a concerned sad warming because you let us share the sadness.

Glorious, dear Martie.

You walked into Spring and the screen of your poetic mind shared the beauty masterfully.

Love,

Yann...thanks for the lovely reply.

Margherita...I always look forward to your replies, almost as much as your poetry.  Your words are always so heart centered and beautiful.

Hi Jimmy...I hope that you not only wanted, but did.  It's good to see you!

Hi Very Barry...It's wonderful to see you.  I wish you the best and hope that all is well in your life.

The world is so beautiful.  Too bad the world keeps changing.

"Tokens that held the thought of the day" is such a testament to the poetic imagination.  My favourite line in the poem.

Elephants in the clouds - white elephants - goes with the wasted treasures of man.  Burdens disguised as gifts.  Your eye is keen enough to see the difference and even to read gifts into the burdens.

It's always an honour to read your poetry, Martie.  Hope you are having a lovely springtime.  I know you are capable of enjoying it more than most people.
