Hands of passing  years have torn this picture
Its fingers have smudged the paper,
And most of the gloss is gone
From three summer-picnic faces.
Caught, mid conversation;

"Shake on salt"  are words-I daydream, hear-
Across lapsed time of more than half a century.

The carpenter speaks-one child listens.
But the pouter refuses, a sign of rebellion
At the start of a new age...ripe
Like the melon, that's just been opened;
Different, but the same in ways.

Where does that days light hide?
Did it return to the sun from where it came?
Or absorb into the vellum
To forever mirror these images
And capture them in time
Moving them light speed
When the album is opened,
Reflecting off my eye?

Whose shoulder was the sun peeking over
Whose eye blinked behind the aperture,
What finger snapped the Brownies shutter?
Whose hands carried the film to the drugstore?

Only that day knows for sure;

The girls are grown up,
They do not remember.
The other
Cannot tell from the grave.

"Shake on salt", says he,I daydream...

Note:
The picture was taken in the early fifties..My wife is the girl on the right, on the left is her sister.
In the middle of course is their "granddaddy",the carpenter.

Very moving, Ford.  The nostalgia of questions that can only be answered by those who are gone, shudders the heart.

The Brownie camera....ahhhhh, what a lovely memory I just had of my dad. And I thank you for this moment of awe, and yes, the world is beautiful

Hah! Yes indeed, Shake on salt. Mellon ain't a melon without salt. Love these vintage shots. Loved your words as you tried to cope with yesterday, and did quite refreshingly.

Blessed be the one who took this picture, it shows such a lovely scene!

You developed this memory of long gone times most beautifully, dear Ford.

Never knew that melon is tasted with salt! Once a Sicilian colleague brought fresh lemons and said they had to be tasted with some salt to display the full fragrance. So I think it's the same with the melon.

Great work.

Love,
Margherita

I thought I had responded to this...
because I know the salt theory
perhaps I just read it
knowing I would return like a burp.
