Joining the circle
the daisies and
buttercups

beneath the great sycamores

the sparrows applaud

latter day treasures
dots on the battlefield

trampled by soldiers
with the brown boots of war.

They will return and grow back, even prettier sometimes.

Emma writes:

"latter day treasures
dots on the battlefield

trampled by soldiers
with the brown boots of war."

To which Sandburg replies:

"Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Shovel them under and let me work -

I am the grass; I cover all."

Great poems come from many different places..and many times are connected, complimenting each other..

enjoyed

Utterly sad and disquieting, but very effective (though I doubt that the sparrows applaud ...).

Nature is strong indeed and the meadow will bloom again, hopefully to never be a battlefield anymore.

Thank you for this.

Love,
Margherita

thank you kindly for the poignant replies. They are very much appreciated and taken to both heart and mind to ponder upon.
