I've a mind to do downtown Thibodaux
bring copies of some of my poems
(I can't remember them to recite
have to read)
I think I'll find a busy corner
clear my throat and give the public
pieces of my mind
I'll bring the American flag
and an LSU and Saints streamers
maybe bring my baseball cap
throw some change into it
and sit it in front of me as I recite
keeping an eye on those who'd
rob a poor poet
(there are those that would)
I know sounds implausible
but they haven't heard my poems yet
they might think I owe them
to listen to the stuff
now that would be humiliating
to the nth
I know what to do
buy a package of cigarettes
some rolling papers
break open a ready-rolled
and roll it like a joint
stick it behind my ear
they'd think if was cool, man
aw, they'd probably snatch
the make-believe weed
go somewhere and smoke it
come back and beat the crap
outta me
just cause they could
I already know nobody'd
try to stop them
people don't help people anymore

I've changed my mind
don't need to go to the hospital
still owe them for my last visit

sometimes good ideas
aren't as good as it sounds like
when you analyze it
that ever happened to you?

I like your raw honesty in this poem, despite the pain of its cynicism.  However, the idea isn't that bad, you know.  I would enjoy coming across a street poetry-reader and if you chose your poetry carefully, it is possible that it could be favourably received.  Even if one person does, that is something.  Though how much you could make, is definitely debatable.

I wouldn't be in it for the money. Thanks for stopping by, Owl.

That hurts to read, and to know
there is truth there, sad to say.
Good gritty poem, packs a punch

There are still those around who will help, but the numbers have dwindled significantly during my life.

Thank you for taking the time out to read and comment on my effort.

Again you capture my attention with your intense rendering of your mind pictures/reality snapshots.

Sharing poetry is a great and noble intention, reciting it requires some special skills, but I am sure you would impress people, dear Jerry.

It is very sad, that people don't help people anymore, that is true, for I have seen this many times, but as you say there is always someone who makes a difference and can influence others too, even with one single action.

Follow your heart.

Love,
Margherita

Appreciate your kind words, Margherita. I have read my poetry in front of people who were there for poetry reading. I enjoy that, but I'd never set up on a street corner and start reciting, although it might just be fun.
