some things last much too long
some thing are gone lickety-split
take the night
lying flat on your back
staring at the strange patterns on the ceiling
because you can't close your eyes
you try mind over matter
or maybe it's matter over mind
whatever
neither works
so you stare at the ceiling
until you begin to hear footsteps up there
terror creeps in
you live alone
just you and the goldfish
you began to hyperventilate
with short, quick gasps
sucked in hoping you can breathe out again
you do
but you breathe it out loudly
oh my goodness quit breathing so loud
but you can't help it
you've lost all sense of judgment
you want to jump out of bed
run like hell
somewhere
you clamp both your hands over your mouth
try breathing through your nose
it helps some
but you're still thinking about bolting out of the room
into the street
screaming for help
you take your hands from your mouth
grab the top of the quilt
ready to fling it off you . . .
but you can't
he'll catch you and do things to you
so . . .
instead of flinging the quilt off
you bring the quilt over your head
there you lay
trying, desperately trying, to not make sounds
as you wait
for the doorknob to turn
and the door to swing open

You're quite welcome, Lori, sleep tight now, you hear?

Smile, you just reminded me that I loaned out my copy of Stephen King's "Insomnia" before I'd even read it.

I am notoriously nocturnal (at least on a local level) and much of my insomnia has been attributed to hormonal imbalances. My current Rx is too strong, so I sleep every other day.

Day, being literal. sigh.

Understanding this one...

Only when I had to work and was sleepy, Owl, or driving somewhere and was sleepy. No, just trying to stay awake I have never done.
