twenty 'til noon
narrow dirt road curls like limp shoelaces
three ebony devils
flying overhead as I eat up the miles
crows
mangy damn things
been with me since I found her gone
humid, stale air
suddenly the sky cracked
sudden downpour resulted
relentless in its fury
as I am with mine
even as the onslaught roared
egrets, braced themselves against the wind
picking at insects
from the rows of sugarcane
wind blowing hard from the gulf
buffeting the Taurus
telling me to turn around
I grit my teeth
trying to calm my stomach
my
Jim Beam hangover
stomach
thoughts of Reva pushing me onward
Reva
early twenties
much, much too young for me
tall and slim
sensuous
the word was invented for her
ever-present sunglasses
shoved up on top of her head
tight jeans
cowboy boots
fiery red hair
plain white t-shirt
calling attention to braless breasts
I know where to find her
she said never again
would she seek out that part of her
she lied
the crows are getting aggressive
and multiplying
so many I can't count
she has set them loose
Reva is gone for good this time
even if I find her
she won't come back to me
I know this
human life is boring to her
thought I could change her
silly, silly me
I pull the Taurus to a stop
I am here
crows have fled
leaving me to my fate
rain stops
I step out onto wet, black topsoil
exploding with mushrooms and buttercups
this place
no different
than when Spanish and French explorers
first set foot
in the swamps of Louisiana
swamp starts abruptly
vines with the girth of boa constrictors
wind around giant cypress trees
I tromp through alligator grass
stop at the silvery curtain of Spanish moss
concealing the living tomb
I smell wildflowers
salt spray
the hot dead odor
of Reva's lair
Reva, Voodoo Queen personified
a society I walk willingly
toward
understanding to do so
seals my fate as
yet another of
the undead of Savoie's Swamp

This is like a story, so detailed with
perfect imagery. Almost reminds me of a movie i saw once.
Good job!

Appreciate it, Dreamgal, The swamps down here are good for black magic kind of writing.

Jerry...Really enjoyed this story. I had a few run ins with those mysterious ladies of the South Louisiana swamps in my youth.
They can capture a mans mind and body so easily. Thanks for sharing this...Paul

Hello Paul, and thank you for stopping by to read and comment on my stuff. Yep. No doubt about it, the Cajun ladies are as fiery as a shot of Tabasco. Gotta love 'em . . .

Thank you, Faith. I'm kinda partial to the south Louisiana swamp tales myself.

WOW Jerry. This is written so well I can smell and feel the dampness of the bayou. This write is so magical (no pun intended) that it pulls you in and won't let go until the very last line and then you want to go back and read it again, and again, just as I have.

Write on my friend,
Marcia

Marcia, much thanks for your very nice comment. Sometimes, some poem, grab you differently than others. this was one of those to me. I think the swamps are getting to me down here. Haha!
