Drinking in the night
like a cup of black coffee,
as you might imagine,
just keeps me awake.
I stumble over the stones
in my stream of thought
and wander among the shadows
of "Once upon a Time" memories,
and then I begin to search
into all of the little black corners
for answers to the many questions
I don't even know how to ask.
I just keep walking the path without end
until morning...
when the birds sing me to sleep.

Ida,

I think you shouldn't drink alone; maybe you should drink with a friend ... like me.  I like this too.

What a journey, dear Ida! That busy mind that won't surrender to the night's invitation of rest. How perfectly you have rendered it!

The birds that finally (and compassionately!)bring the gift of sleep is a wonderful conclusion. It is as if they wanted you to reassure that everything is fine, relax!

Wonderful.

Love,
Margherita

Thank you all for your comments and, Alison, If I didd decide to have a drink I can't think of anyone I would rather drink with but as it is I am just a terrible insomniac "drinking in the night like a cup of black coffee."

Ok I get it, lovely words, insomnia is like drinking coffee before night, this is gracious and as always a subtle write, without all turpitudes that night delivers without rest...Thanks Ida for the delicate poem.

The closeness of the night and inability to not visit these remembrances of our past we, at times, feel we have committed some sort of crime to be tortured so.

Thanks, Jerry, actually, I have always been a bit of an insomniac, even as a child. Never could shut it down at night.
