To all the friends I've never met and those not seen in years,
Let's stay in touch, let's spread our hopes, let's share our deepest fears.
To brothers, sisters, cousins, kin I never knew I had,
We'll reminisce our good times and, together, bear the sad.

I'll read each time you break for lunch or buy a pair of shoes,
Your Status keeping me apprised of all your private news.
Poking, prodding, Friending, Liking things we each admire,
We'll spend our days enthralled in Mark Zuckerberg's empire.

I'll let you write things on my Wall and then I'll write on yours
An odd collage of stuff we Like, a few we both abhor.
I'll Tag you in my pictures and Poke you just for fun,
Reminding you of all the work we're both not getting done.

To all the friends I've never known and those long since forgotten:
If you'll Like me then I'll Like you --  just click the bloody button.

It's true, guys, the main site now has its own Facebook page -- a harbinger of some big changes waiting just around the corner. We talking a new Wordpress blog replacing our old News section, a basic redesign and reorganization, new poetry categories, and (drum roll please) a few thousand new poems.

The first step, though, is to "claim our name," which will let us use http://facebook.com/netpoets instead of a much longer one with a bunch of numbers in it. To make that claim, apparently we first need 100 Likes (or 25, depending on which documentation you read?).

So? What are you waiting for? "Just click the bloody button!"

Yep. I never thought I would be caught up in the Facebook thing, but I managed to do it after all. I still maintain some dignity, however, for I don't play Farmville or any of the rest of those stupid games and whatever. You're right though, yesterday I went on my site and wrote "Writing a Political Thriller is no Fun," on my wall.

You called it with this poem.

tsk, tsk, tsk.

Sounds enticing, but what's wrong with checking in HERE?

sheesh....and grumble.

Maybe I should get my alter-ego an alter-ego?

Thanks, everyone!

This Facebook stuff is kind of fun. And exhausting. I just friended everyone above who Liked netpoets from my personal account < http://www.facebook.com/ron.carnell >, unless of course you were already Friended, which many of you were. If I missed someone or you're not in the list above, feel free to hit me with a Friend Request.

The new design at the main site is going to include a FB Like button on every poem. It's not something I did lightly (we've always tried to avoid turning poetry into a competition), but I'm looking forward to seeing how many new readers it brings our authors.

Which, I suppose, brings us to Karen's excellent question:

quote:
... but what's wrong with checking in HERE?

Absolutely nothing, dear Karen. But the people who are HERE are already here. What about the people who aren't here?

For example, I have a lot of Friends on Facebook who are either web site developers or magicians. Some of the former and many of the latter don't know I also have an interest in poetry. The minute I clicked the Like button on the netpoets page, however, they saw it in their News Feed. Now they know. More importantly, any of them who share that interest, even just peripherally, might just visit the main site and discover some really great poetry. Facebook essentially gives us an opportunity to reach out to an audience who might not have sought us out on their own.

There are secondary reasons (many main site authors don't participate in the faster paced forums, for example), but that's certainly the main one.

QUESTION for everyone: I'm not sure it's even possible (the forum software is pretty fussy), but what would y'all think about adding a Like button to these pages?

I am with you regarding the "I like" button. We "like" so many things that we actually know or like less than Passions in Poetry/piptalk, so why not?!

I will "like" it!

Love,

I like the like that might bring more poets to like Passions, like, it would be fun, like, wouldn't it....?

And I just discovered what the younger generations like about the word like...

and if this response doesn't like get them all in here for the response mostly likely to repeat the word like, then I'm like really not a harbinger of like good news, y'know?

Like at myself!

gosh Ron, I don't know about a Like button on these pages...Like buttons are everywhere these days.

It's just nice to have something old/familiar maybe even vintage, yaknow, the way it was when we were kids just starting out here, back in what? 1979?  give or take 20 years LOL

JMHO and you can take it or leave it. I know I haven't really been around PIP lately...and it's mainly because of Facebook and these games that I have gotten addicted to, (as well as lack of inspiration for rhyming words that I've rhymed for dozens of years)

It's great what you are doing with the facebook, but it's everywhere! It is just bombarding and suffocating at times. Personally, for me, it's just nice to come to an old stomping ground and be able to breathe freely, yaknow?

I was liking Dixie's post.

If I must plead with Ron to not install a "like" button, I will.

Please, Ron, keep this a writing forum.

Even if all someone does is type "wow" or "I like this" at least it is words. I'm squeamish about the "like" button because I foresee an onslaught of thumbs and no thought to critique. Among the most favorite moments I've had in my time at Pip is the moments I received replies from people who let me know through their replies that I was successful in my efforts to convey an emotion.

So please, no thumbs. Granted, there might be people who would utilize that instead of leaving no reply at all, but right now I am imagining posting a poem and finding twenty thumbs down with no explanations.

Frankly, that would suck.

I thought I would like the like button, but Serenity makes a good point. A response is nicer. The button is too easy but it would at least let some one know they were read.
However,if a vote is taken I vote no to the like button for Serenity's good reason. It
is more personal. jo

I personally don't like, don't use and will never use Facebook for various reasons, and it's getting so it's everywhere, totally invasive...so in that respect...my opinion is on the NO LIKE side (along with what passing shadows and serenity said).

Ron,
Having read all the pros and cons, I would definately "like" PIP on Facebook (If they hadn't terminated my account for trying to recruit too many people to join my mafia, lol). As far as the "like" button on here,
you're the captain, I trust you will make
the right decision as to what is best for the site in your usual fashion.

I "like" your poem, and I would like the blue pages any ole day.

I too am on Facebook, and added myself to your very kewl graphic above.

You are so right Ron, a lot of time is wasted on Facebook that is for darn sure.  I got rid of Twitter, as it was just all too, too, much!

Great idea, and great poem.

Your post reminds me of Willie Nelson's "To All the Girls I've Loved Before". It has the same rhythym. Well done Ron and thanks for the info. I clicked the button :-)

LOL, loved the poem Ron, and I enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts.

Facebook definately has it's place in the world today, and that means an audience. That can only be a good thing when it comes to readers and those who wish to find poetry. That's a pretty exciting step!
