Freeway

Something is dying here tonight
creeping up Highway 101 in the dagger moonlight
we scatter like autumn leaves
we, the midnight magicians and the forty thieves
are we in the understanding
of this tremendous crash landing
heartbreak nonwithstanding,
we will rise in stormy skies
and ride on

Somewhere in the ruins of you
there is a heartbeat much too scared to move
but just take my trembling wing
we'll case this town and get drunk on everything
and find ourselves in debt
in places we haven't been yet
oh no sorrow, no don't regret
we can rise in Montana skies
and glide on

Freeway, roll on past a firebird dawn
where the embers of night smolder
where we won't feel so much older
tell me there's nothing in our way
no speed limit signs
down that long freeway line

Somebody take me to heart
piece together whatever hope I've torn apart
I've cut myself on the shards
of the broken love I for which I fell so hard
but down a snakeskin road
I will carry a heavy, heavy load
fly straight and true to my code
rise in the morning, and fly
yeah fly on

Freeway, roll away, 1969 Chevrolet
go hit that pedal straight on through
to where the sun will find us in bloom
please tell me there is a perfect sunray
to light up everyone
down that long freeway run

Now with sweet music on the radio
and a pretty little blossom that I know
then maybe baby
we can make the turnpike through this torrential rain
and what pleasures there is to find beyond that freeway fastlane
oh heartache on the wane

Freeway, roll on like a freedom song
I sang for all our dreams to come true
with a couple of friends we once knew
oh just tell me that it's gonna be okay
we'll find our way somehow
down that long stretch of Colorado freeway now
oh deliver me now

Oh when all hearts beat, they beat together,
but still we're all alone
until we admit, yeah we can atone
and way yonder down that freeway,
where darkness roams,
I'm coming home
yeah I'm coming home

Wow...this is my day to be blasted back to my past...another Highway 101 poem...

and it comes across like a song.

What was your inspiration for this piece?
