I was on my way to singing a song
of peace and harmony
when the smell of a woodman's fire
sparked flames in my desire.

There followed then a rush, scurry,
to close the doors and windows
for desire serves no one best
when ignited by the long lost past.

I settled then back down to be
the composer of what has to be
but suddenly crescendos spiked
where they weren't meant to be.

To the garbage bin went notes and songs
with peace and harmony in tow
but desire still lines the walls
ready to bounce back at me.

It's okay really, let it be,
I've known it, touched it, held it close,
and know it's just a-lingering
as a spectator of my life.

Don't light a fire, oh, woodman, please!
It disturbs the silence, bothers me,
and sends me off a-wandering
from the path of peace and harmony!

Thanks, Richard.  Don't you just hate it when that happens.

Honeybunch - It seems that passion waits at the brink of extinction for someone to resurrect it or at the brink of eruption for someone to ignite it. And the next thing you know, there you are in a house ablaze where you'd rather stay and burn up than leave with the fireman. And before all this, you were happy to just sing songs of peace and harmony. Ain't life grand, especially when it comes straight at ya! Really enjoyed this piece Honeybunch. Namyh

This is just nice!  Peace and harmony is different for all of us,
and yet it is human nature to seek it out and hang on for dear life.

.... least we ever lose our grip!

Love reading you, honey girl~

Thank you, Namyh.  You are so right! So glad you enjoyed.

Bluesy gal - I guess whatever we are settled in is the peace and harmony we seek.  The trick is to be "settled" and to know it - that has evaded me for some time now because ... there are dreams, you know.  Thanks for reading and for your nice comment.

Very interesting thoughts on desire and it's role in creativity. I like the metaphor: desire and fire. Both can be either stimulating or destructive. A deep poem indeed and very well expressed.

In desire there is the pulse of life, dear Helen. So, savor the fire that ignites desire.
Peace and harmony are wonderful, but not if they are born out of resignation, withdrawal and sterility. There must be joy in peace and harmony, not mere contentedness.

Wonderfully written piece and as always thought provoking.

Love,
Margherita

How can I add to the stellar comments above? Can't, so I shan't (love that word). However, there is one thing I would like to point out, between the "woodman's fire" and the notes you threw into the garbage bin (later to rescue I imagine) you turned out a fantastic piece of work here in spite of yourself.

Thanks, dear Margherita.  Yes, "joy" should be in everything - isn't yet though.  Was it ever?  I don't think there are many of us who truly experience joy anymore - too many distractions which perhaps will too soon disappear.  I always appreciate your enlightened comments very much.

Hi Jerry - Thank you.  No, no retrieval or rescue as you say - what's gone is gone.  Then again that woodman's fire has been known to return again, again.  Here's an old write as proof.

How sweet the smell of smoke
rising from a woodman's fire
amidst the rocks and boulders
of this concrete jungle, home.

Down I go on knees; nothing here it seems
but senses do not lie or offer me a bribe
to light the flame of passion
and elevate desire
beyond the blue of sky.

Head tilted I breathe in
in, in, and deeper in,
but let me pause a spell;
could it be the fires of hell
burning to a cinder
love's magic and mystique?

Yes, 'tis so; the serpent knows
how swiftly evil strikes
when the woodman goes a-chopping,
not today but other days,
to fuel the fire of love's denial
and smoke the loving out.

But how sweet the smell of smoke
rising from a woodman's fire
because only wood can burn
in a bonfire of denial
while love remains triumphant
beyond the blue of sky!
