So to the surface came a worm
to see what it could see
hoping that the top-side
was the same as underground.

There was light, indeed there was,
but harsh and stark
it couldn't see
the inner meaningful.

It wiggled, squirmed, and made its way
in circles round the scene
pushing, pushing, dirt away
but still it couldn't see.

Poor little worm heart sore now
simply disappeared
and I looked, you know, like woman do
but I know it went down deep.

Little worms are happy there
where the light of day can't reach
and blind it to the inner truth
of he who walks top-side.

Born to be one in the light
I'm yet like a worm sometimes
because I love you, truly love you,
when I disappear down deep!

Everyone needs an escape hatch to crawl into, Helen, and it seems you have perfected one for yourself.

Now, if that little worm could imagine how he inspired you, he would swiftly come up again into the light and cheer you up. Love is light and it penetrates all darkness, the worm knows. And you know too.

This was great!

Love,

Thank you all so much for your comments and, Steaven, thank you for the smile you brought to my face.

Dear Margherita - Such a busy worm it was too - made me feel lazy just sitting there watching it.  The pleasures of retirement!

Helen, a charming write. I'm so glad
you didn't get picked off by the Robins
now abundant in the yards!

I have a worm bin of composting worms ... grins ... in my house.  And, I love my worms.  What an interesting poem, Helen.  I loved how you wrapped the emotion and comparison to you with those wormy buggers.

Thank you for sharing with us.

Sunshine -   No bird could fly away with me and if they tried for the worm - well, they would have had to get past me first!

Alison - My son has a worm bin as well but in the garage.  I haven't met them yet.     Thank you for enjoying my story.

I named mine!

All the Daddy worms are Bobby.  Mommy worms are Susie.  Daughter and son are Cindy and Craig.  Now please don't ask me which is which.  I just call them and they come - or hide.  Some are shy, you know.

I bet you have some wonderful conversations with the ones who aren't shy.  I know I would - they'd know all my "secrets".  Say Hi to the family from me.

This poem worms the cockles of my heart...

I've learned so much this morning. ALison names her worms. Helen talks to them and tells them her secrets. No wonder they stay underground as much as they can!!!!!

Multi-faceted work here, Helen, a lot can be derived from the worms plight.

Oh, the two J's!     Thank you both very much - and, yes, Jerry, so much to learn from the seemingly most insignificant things.

So many good thoughts, love the analogy and all that it implies.

This was fun while leaving much to ponder.

Hugs, Helen~

Helen...Digging in the earth brings pleasure to many ... for in the dark cool loam under there, the quiet gives up secrets.  I loved your worm story.

Thanks, Lori and Martie.  I surely never thought I'd ever write a story about a worm but ... life is full of surprises.
