Fair to middlin' of nowhere

It lurks in
the empty darkness
of its content
Biding its time
mapping my fault lines
testing tremors
Waiting for my
perfect storm
to create
its quake
that shakes
and crumbles
my self esteem
Into broken pieces
of worthlessness
ugly and stupid
Creating a pitiful pile
of guilt
and a skinful of shame
seeking solace
of the flesh

You know that "beast" and have illustrated it here very well. Oh, that "lurking" is so subtle that we succumb again and again ... Yet, to be aware of this process means also to be able to find the way to fight it.

Very impressive write, dear Lori.

Love,

Probably mostly in your own mind.
You're a very intelligent woman who doesn't give herself enough credit.
Intelligence sometimes creates such double thought, even when it's not necessary.
I wouldn't worry too much at all.
You're a very good person and that shows more than anything else.

have a great day!

Yes Margherita, one learns to fight it, finding new ways all the time. I apreciate your understanding.

Eric, I know it is in my head and that it will pass and you hold on to that because when you are in the dark, that's not the way it feels. Thanks for your kind words

Been there. Done that. Took me a long time to kick the hell out of mine. You'll be better at kicking the hell out of yours, I'm thinking

I'm definitely not trying to disregard your feelings.
I'm trying to encourage you. I'm old enough to be your father and I've seen a lot.
It's a scientific fact that panic attacks and thoughts similar are a learned response.
Most people come to a realization that there's absolutely nothing on the other side of a panic attack or similar feelings. Absolutely nothing that can possibly help you in any way whatsoever.
Not making light of your emotions but they can be a total waste of time.
Some of us are super sensitive and that leads to a racing of thoughts toward the possible worst, with no real foundation.
I'm probably making things worse Lori
However, I have read many of your works here and I know you're a good person and mean well toward others.
That in itself is a treasure worth more than gold!

Take care

you are an amazing writer and one of my favorite poets here...thank you for sharing this deeply personal poem...you are stronger than you think...you are smarter than you think...you are more appreciated than you know...thank you for your friendship

There must be a poem in here somewhere.

The perfect storm is no match for wings.  May you fly above it and witness rainbows.  How vibrant they are and leave no room for dragons.

Faith, you overwhelm me with your kind response. you are a good friend.  Just wanted to let everyone know that my "downer poems" are transient in nature and not to get too concerned. Thank you Faith you are special too

Klassy Lassy-most of the time I have wings and about that dragon...sometimes I get weary of keeping one eye open on him. Other people who have struggled with depression understand that sometimes its like catching a cold...it just happens and you have to make the best of it.  Thank you so much for your wonderful support.  I will reread these responses the next time I feel a "cold" coming on.

I know you will know, Lori, that I am not trying to make light of your depression, and I know that your dragon is of a metaphorical nature, but I just couldn't resist the chance to say that some dragons are really cute and not all dragons breathe fire.  I seem to remember a child's story about a friendly dragon.  But yes, I do concur that it is wise to avoid some metaphorical dragons.

Hugs (and I know you will bump out of the depression)

Love this too.  I have a potato gun.  It doesn't do much for confidence, but it's hell on the beast.
