what would the world be
without 'em
mankind
womankind
personkind
from cave dwellers
scribbling on the walls
to be found centuries later
have been writing
and reading
books
philosophy of day-to-day living
looks like graffiti to us
somber writing unearthed
we have found in the Dead Sea Scrolls
we read of an accomplished little femme fatale
tender age of twelve
Lolita
yes, shock and awe
just as prominent as the dusty tomes
of the oldsters
course the oldsters were quite racy
for their own time
don't'ya'know
The Canterbury Tales
but wait! but wait!
what about the . . . gasp . . .
Bible
yup, the Good Book
had it all
thass whot I'm talkin' 'bout
incest
between two sisters and the pa
plus
I mean, come on guys and gals
if there were only two people in the world
in the beginning God created . . .
and they had children
and they had children
and . . .
well, you get the message
besides, there are many more passages
of what could be called
pornography
'tween the covers of the Good Book
books
we use them for many reasons
write down out innermost thoughts
I've done that ad nauseam
used to be
not many people could read
therefore books
(some bound in human skin)
yep, sure was
and are still around today
were for the elite
ah
but along came Johannes Gutenberg
inventor of movable type
and the printing press
now the select few who could read grew somewhat
but it was
Ottmar Mergenthaler
of linotype fame
(I've a long history with that contraption)
now books were mass produced
more people were reading
not just the privileged
more were writing
keeping up with the demand for
books
I ask as I leave you
where would we be without books
where indeed

I checked out your homepage and it appears that you've been 'guilty' of writing a few of them yourself! lol Impressive!

Lots of interesting info in your poem. I had forgotten about the human skin covers for the elite! Egads!

Good morning Linda. Thee human skin-bound books have fascinated me for quite a while. I even began a novel about a serial killer who used his victims in that way. I still would like to do it, but if I do it will have to be a screenplay, for that's what I have branched out to do these days, working on my first one as we speak, "Adam & Eve."

Thanks for checking out my book store and for reading and commenting here.

Where indeed Jerry...back to the poets passing down the oral history? Darn us pesky word wranglers, we've been in the mix as long as memory.
