I'm starved for
delectable edibles
from the banquet table
its goodies
quite foreign to me
though strangely I know its content
almost by heart
so why do I sit here
hungry?
and why, when I attempt to eat
say, a ripe, swollen, juicy pear from a bowl
the bowl
and with it the pear
scoot just out of my reach?
I'm hungry
I've been hungry all my life
reaching for the banquet's hor d'oeuvres
only allowed to partake
of the crumbs
grand table that it is
laden with sumptuous delights
is merely a mirage?
something I am beholden to believe
but not to partake?
fables have been woven around the table
and all of its gifts for its believers
from childhood I have heard
it's better to give than to receive
that the table
with all its wonders
shall be mine
in the bye and bye
if only I will keep the belief
though I toil with emptiness now
there will come a time
someday
somehow
somewhere
I will be summoned to sit at the table
wearing golden sandals
drinking from golden goblets
and feast
from the bountiful table
my every desire
attended to by winged and haloed attendees
nothing to do but eat
make merry
have good fellowship
chant hosannas never out of tune
peace and love and light and goodness outshines
even what the orators
did proclaimed
but my dear, dear table
laden with so much it will never be emptied
what about now?
why must I be so hungry?
now
why do I suffer such pain?
now
I know the table is mine to have someday
if I but keep the faith
I will have love in overabundance
I know
but where is that love
now?
I hunger for it as I hunger for manna
supernatural food from thy table
I know I shall have some day
still, I sleep afraid
could you do something about fear
and loneliness and
. . .
I'm sorry
I'm selfish, I know
its just that
although I try to do right
try to better myself
something always happens
I keep getting knocked down
I sure could use a bit of
that all-encompassing love
from the banquet table
just for
oh, I don't know
say a day or two
now

Don't worry, dreamgal, I'm not very profound either. The thing is the waiting and the bumps in the road, never mind the damned mountains and the disease and warts, and . . . Oh, 'scuse myself, got carried away a bit. Thanks for being here.

Thanks, Lori, I assume for most "thinking" people, this does come up from time to time.

I am glad you found my work likeable, Faith, thank you for being here.

The significance of keeping getting knocked down is that you must be getting up again after each time you are knocked down!  Smiles.

I thank you, Spiros. I've been tardy coming to your place, but like you I read your posting, it's just that sometimes I'm at a lost what to comment. Thank you for being here.

It appears that we all need a piece of it 'now'
That table I believe needs to be accessed as you mention, through all the right kinds of work.
Shouldn't be exactly free or the recipient's too prideful.Humility plays a super important role.

Like the old joke.

Scientist comes to God and says
"God, we don't need you anymore."
God replies, Oh, why's that?"
Scientist, "because we discovered how to make man on our own!"
"Oh, really, explain how you do that," Says God.
"The same way you do it!" the proud scientist replies, "from the dirt on the ground!"
God says, "show me how you do it."
Scientist bends over and grabs two handfuls of dirt.
God speaks up boldly, "NO NO NO, get your own dirt!"
