"The Garden"

She sits in her garden of yesterdays
listening for the crunch of gravel
beyond the bend in the road.

A hat with ribbons fading
shielding her face
her hands resting in her lap
and she waits and listens.

The birds singing in the orchard
go unheard. She hears only
the swish of tires on the highway
below the hill where she
resides, in a fortress from the world.

Each evening she prepares
a dinner with care for two
and eats alone reading his letters
over and over the pages worn.

When she's able, she sleeps
her last thought of the day, her prayer,
maybe tomorrow passers by
won't see her sitting in the garden,
listening and waiting.

This is very beautiful, Marcia, but achingly sad.

I like this. I remember your achingly sad, but truly lovely poems from back then. It is good to read them again.

Very poignant.

Younger folks these days did not see that world---just after widened roads and passers-by---pass, but some of us a little older did, and remember. I feel sorry for this poem's subject in place and time, but am glad that someday by the grace of God she will find peace. I wish her well in the meantime, too. As for the orchard...

A great write.

The sadness here lingers long after the reading. Touches the heart in that special way that only a really good poem can.
