the illegal numbers racquet used to be
played on the street
check the personals ads in the paper next day
see if you won
the numbers racquet
was run by the guys with bent noses
for the most part
big money in it
just like there is today
in those days
if you played the numbers on credit
and didn't pay
busted kneecaps was sure to get your attention
these days
playing the numbers
have gone legit
sorta
in the back of my mind
I still see the bent noses crowd
involved somehow
I play the numbers
twice a week
powerball, lotto and pick 3
six buck a week
tonight is the night they draw
I have my numbers
I know the odds
not looking to become a millionaire
still . . .
each night
each night they draw the numbers
I get a little twinge in my chest
and a gnawing feeling inside me
saying, what if it would really happen
it's there each time
they draw
I think this might be my night to win
I think about who I will help
when I win
and who I won't help
payback is a futhermucker
I get a warm glow
thinking about not having to worry about money
anymore
I go the quick pick route
used to pick my own numbers
doesn't matter
chances are I'm not going to win anyway
still . . .
as time nears to draw the numbers
I get a little twinge in my chest

I considered it a cheap vacation. A lotto ticket, a six pack of beer, and one of those Real Estate freebie-catalogs...

every Saturday.

Even longer ago, I used to play the bookie cards--the trick was to watch the spreads.

Thanks Jer. I've been going down a lot of avenues via Memory lane lately.

I so know the feeling. For about 5 minutes, I come up with some very big dreams.

Good one Jerry~

Thanks, serenity for being here.

Blues, I'm laughing at your comment.

You expressed the feelings of anticipation very well here, dear Jerry. Something many can relate to I guess! Who has never hoped to change his life with a spectacular prize?

Love,
Margherita

Hi, Margherita, so good to see you here. I just play the numbers, not expecting to win, but also understanding that it is possible. At least I'm not like a neighbor of mine who is convinced the manipulate the number on purpose to keep you from winning. He says they cheat. I maintain is is just luck and no "system" can beat it.
