I remember your beauty
when you were proud to be beautiful
beauty which eclipsed your vibrancy
long ago when you played the tramp
I touched you
held your hand and whispered softly
into your throat
I watched you fall through doors
toward the tinkle and pseudo-glamour
of gin mills
strange men and spotted sheets

you looked at me through
armored eyes
through the mirrors behind the bars
jukebox wailing Waylon
now there's a real man
you muttered, whiskey breath
under flashing neon signs
on the avenue of ominous sights
of the vagabond begging for cigarettes
you kept telling me
I was your one pang of guilt

I remember those days
when you thought your ass
was God's Gift
and you were right
you made me feel like
a sleazy drug lord
with all the money in the world
watching my woman
shake it and turn and smile
a bit of red tongue showing
black eyes flashing
about secrets
I should have never told you

I remember your beauty
and you thought it would never fade
you still smile at yourself
through the mirror behind the bar
the woman smiling back
with a toothless grin
is not the same young, vibrant one
but you think it is

I look for you ever so often
clean you up
get you a room for a month
so you don't have to sleep in the street
you don't remember me
think I'm a trick
it's okay
I understand and if truth is known
I still love you in my own way

The only thing missing from this are the forgiving red lights which graced the sad faces all posturing at their best angles...

There's a certain someone that I wonder about from time to time, wondering if he wonders about me.

Hugs, for the haunted.

And God/dess bless my teeth--they've proven to be most loyal in my grin.

I love this. You said I write the blues? Lovie? You just wrote my torchsong.

Lori, when you comment thusly, I just want you to know that it gives my heart a warm and fuzzy feeling. Thank you.

Serenity, I can almost bet that ghost from your past thinks about you. All past lovers go back from time to time and relive what we had, and what we lost. If this is your torchsong I am proud to have been the one who wrote it.

Hi Faith. I appreciate, as always, hearing from you. When you say the poem filled you with a lot of different emotion, that made my day, for that is what it is supposed to do.
