If you would have told me 15 years ago
I'd have a dog and be married to John,
I'd have shook my head and laughed
and asked what drugs you were on.

I despised canines and hardly knew the man
who would later come to fulfill God's plan-
set in my own torturous ways,
fighting to enjoy my days
while nights of madness, sadness ran.

What was I thinking?
I sure wasn't considering getting old.
Now what I have is more than all
of what the greatest stories ever told.

And yes I'm old, so what?
It's the best days of my life!
because I'm a dog parent
and a much-loved wife,

two best friends, Spike and John,
I'm so glad the past 15 years are gone.

Yes, I know how you feel, and how we wish some years had disappeared

but you're not old :-)
I can tell by this write
that you're young at heart

I'm not exactly feeling the bliss tonight, so do you mind if I paraphrase your opening stanza a bit?

If you'd have told me years ago,
I'd have a dog and I'd married one too,
I would asked what drugs y'owned,
and could you spare me two?

True story Dixie--I recently went out and discovered an old friend still tending bar at the same tavern after thirty years. I called her over to the side, said hey, and asked her if she remembered that guy who tried to kill me one night.

"I sure do," she frowned loyally.

"I want you to know I got him back."

"You did? Uh oh...what did you do?"

"Married him."

She's the one who said life works out strange. Buy them both some beggin' strips!

*laughing*

I can so relate to this piece. I find a lot
of myself in your words too. This is delightful as are the responses.

Isn't it nice to look back and feel happy in the present?
Sounds like a country song. I like your style.

thats right, thats my country music writing poetic princess... you need your own poetry amusement park, you could call it, Dixieland!

I'm so glad for you that those bad years are past, and what don't kill us only makes us stronger right... you being happy, makes me happy, and all the rest of us, too!

This is such a moving story, and it should be taken in that way. I am happy for you that, old or not, you are happy and THAT, my friend means everything.
