Going Squirrely

As the rains keep coming harder,
the pounding keeps the beat.
Outside my window working,
a squirrel completes his feat.

Not knowing where he's nesting
and hoping not to find
his choice to be my rooftop
or within my home, confined.

Cute they look to many
who feed and nourish each.
But if I had my choice I would
prefer them out of reach!

You've made me smile so wide...

my neighbors have literal squirrels in their attic, to match their reputation! (I think it's okay for me to type that since we've already concluded that the whole neighborhood is fulla nuts.)

A very serendipitous poem for this very squirrelly friend of yous.

If you only knew...it's a good thing I don't own a gun (the squirrels cost me thousands in redoing the ceiling and roof of my wrap around porch) I am definitely not fond of squirrels and don't feed them or the birds since that ends up with them living and damaging my property. But since I am one of the few who loves and has trees and gardens, they like to hide their nuts here!

Oh Mo, I do know.

Forgive me if I repeat the anecdote, but I have this friend who is an animal protection advocate. Then? Tsk....raccoons invaded her attic.

Her husband was like, "Well baby, I suppose we could go buy some humane traps and--"

He was interrupted and taken aback by her response:

"You get up there and shoot those expletives!!!" and she raised her fist to her attic, yelling at them, "I don't invade your home and tear up your electrical system, now do I?"

She's cute. And I'm riding an mucinex and green tea buzz, so I should just be quiet, huh?

Love ya lady.

Oh, Karen, you have lifted me up on a very rainy, chilly, depressing day.

It's funny that I had to take that picture this morning of that squirrel tearing the bark off of my poplar tree. I  saw him from my 1 foot window at the top of my stairs and ran to get the camera...he worked so hard I almost enjoyed it (for the moment)but was really hoping the bark would let loose and he would fall(no such luck).

I still haven't figured out yet where he is nesting and sure hope it is not in my attic or third floor where I haven't gone for awhile.
Last year in the early spring they shredded all of my outside chair cushions for their nest in the old porch ceiling.
Sighing~~

Back when we had trees? I used to gather acorns to spread beneath some cypress trees that were a bit more distant from my house. (I could have sworn I saw a squirrel looking at the Cypress trees in confusion, but he or she seemed happy enough to have his food fest, even if it wasn't where he thought it would be.)

Yep. I can drive a squirrel squirrelly.

Smile, lovie, smile.

just a big rat

I have been dealing with mice lately here. They love cashews so that's my bait! It works like a charm.

Your poem gave me the skin-crawlies, along with thinking about checking my traps again in the morning.

I know squirrels can be very destructive.
There are electronic devices that can be purchased to drive them out of an attic  or other patrs of the house etc.

Buy the squirrels, raccoons, rats, mice a first class ticket for a seat on an aeroplane and give them directions to my South African indigenous forest garden.  I would love to have them all, except that they aren't indigenous to our area and could cause an ecological problem!  Perhaps you could ask them to be neutered and spayed quite some time before their 'plane trip (so that they have recovered completely and are comfortable on the flight).  Smiles.  Your little squirrel melts my heart, Maureen.

My parents cater to their squirrels with the little corn cob holder and a feeder full of peanuts.  They love to sit at their kitchen table and watch them going squirrely.  Apparently they have not had the negative experiences you have had. (I had no idea they could be such a nusance)
Enjoyed your poem very much.

I love the rhythm of your song-like write, but as far as squirrels go (I must have a hundred in my back yard alone) there is only one that I enjoy watching...the one who runs in circles around the trees along the perimeter of the yard....around and around and around...want one to go with yours?

no thanks Steaven...do you see the bark in the squirrel's mouth? I watched him shred it off of my tree... they have some very sharp teeth and claws and that is nothing  compared to the damage they can cause...over $3000 worth last year. As long as they remain outside and not interferring with property they can live peaceably in the yard.

They look cute but...
