Long did I linger midst
the dark, damp forest of despair
unaware if the sun was shining above.
The dense foliage forming
a canopy overhead covering
the sky with outstretched
moss-draped arms
fingers reaching out
as if to envelope me.
The ground underfoot strewn
with molded pine cones.
The oppresive surroundings
leaving a bitter taste on the tongue.
Thick air resonating with sounds
of loons in a faraway pond.
Longing for home I make my way back
arriving to find a winter rose
blooming in the sun
and in the mail... a letter from you.

Yes, a letter, a smile, a kind word or even a thought from a special person can bring that sun back again....you say it very well.

Well now, this is very special.
Your ending gave me such a good feeling.

What a treat to read.

Marcia,

This brought to mind a visit
to the redwoods area of California...
a long time ago place where I once
grew up...

but I've grown up in several areas since,
but nothing brings to mind more than
the pungent smells of redwood, cedar, and
eternal growth!

This is lovely Word Weaver, though I must confess, I enjoyed the forest far more than I believe you intended your readers to, in this particular poem, because of its metaphorical significance.  I am a forest person - although I love grasslands and sunshine very much as well.
