Okay ... this isn't really a poem ...
Guidance needed.
I’m hoping to find a way to earn some money by using the computer.
Okay, like, who isn’t.
I notice that even on personal pages there are many adds, and links to things the person thinks you might be interested in or want to know about.  Does this imply a contractual arrangement between the person’s web page and others sponsoring organizations?  Do organizations or businesses buy add space from a person or their site?
Almost everybody has google, psychic reading 900 numbers, and a whole slew of more or less questionable advertising the person presumably wants you to know about.
If I had a site, could I use it to advertise the companies and organizations I favor, or would I have to carry links to junk?
And are the sites that say you can create a web page “free” really “free?  Are they just a way of getting you to purchase something later?  If these things are free, then why are domain names bought and sold?
What would I do with or put on my web page?  If I had one?
Since my stuff, such as it is, is already out on Pip, of what use would a personal web page be if I had one?
I have come to believe that nothing on the Internet really is what it seems and that there are sharks in the water waiting to take advantage of the gullible and naïve.  I was advised to avoid getting mixed up with the “income at home” sites even if they are nationally advertised and even if they say they are certified Better Business Bureau.  After all, what else are they going to tell you----that they stink?

I must rely on SSI, live in the projects, and have just dollars to spare after food and rent and the connection fee.  There is nothing left for services purporting to help you start a page or a business.  I’m not sure if I’ll even get out of here alive, and no, I won’t bug you about diabetes, (it ain’t serious”   Virus attacks have done enormous damage and left me very cynical and almost paranoid about cyber security.  Sister thinks I’m a “great” writer type that should get a break, but I have no idea which of my stuff to sell to whom, and the Internet is choked with unsolicited material from aspiring wann-a-bees, of which I and others of my fellow Pipsters are just one.  In any event, whoever wants to can just google for whatever interests them.
Since my stuff can be viewed by whoever wants to, nobody need pay me for anything.  I’m not sure what is meant by a “break,” I don’t know what that would that would mean or what I would do, and it ain’t worth the trouble sending out unsolicited stuff to pubs that don’t know who I am or have any reason to look at it.
My solutions has been to let sleeping dogs lie, and that relatives who do not take the advice they themselves offer me just aren’t worth listening to.
I don’t know what anybody can tell me.
Guess I’m just dumping this stuff out of my system and now I have to go.

Hi Jaime,

First,I would suggest that you not post commentary and informational posts on this board.  It's going to get lost in the poetry.  You might get a better response if this was on the PiPTalk Lounge under the Discussion forum.  Both you post and my response might get moved - so if you can't find your post, check there.

Second, I know next to nothing about paid advertisements on sites.  However, I have been told and have read that they are often a sure, quick way to get a computer virus.  I tend to avoid them like the Black Death.  I have known people who have started sites, advertising products and I have not heard one of them say that they are making (or have made) money.  Honestly, they seem pretty labor-intensive to start with little to no payback.  Someone else may pipe up and prove me wrong.  More power to them.  I just don't think that is a way that I would encourage you to spend your time.

I agree that you are a good and interesting writer.  I have read some of your presentations (or one of them) and was quite impressed.  Is there a way that you can channel writing into dollars?  Jaime, I don't have any ideas to offer at the moment. However, I'll think about it and let you know if I come up with something.  I'll take any further dialogue on this private with you.

I respect your desire to work and I have grown to respect you.  Hang in there and keep on thinking.  Something will pan out, I am sure.

Your friend,
Alison

I do think there are some out there that are making a living on the net.
However, I think they're in the government medical field and processing documents or that type of thing.
There are some things that are above board but I believe that's only a miniscule percentage of them and how would one really know.
My opinion on all of them is if they're asking for money up front then they're not worth looking at. Or, if it's too good to be true it always is, 'too good to be true'.
If you get hired for a regular job they don't ask you for money up front.

Alison's probably right this should be in a discussion forum

Take Care
