VANILLA LATTE

Opaque and creamy sweet
that spirit world I long for,
a rare treat not close at hand
but never bitter with the taste
of disappointment.

I listen to the babble around me,
snatches of thought, stray grains
of sugar-dreams, conversations
half-finished, dissolved in a rush
of pressured steam.

Often the spirits are silent,
their presence concentrated
on a book or a screen.
I sip and imagine what they see,
a world distant and delicious,
conflict’s acid flavor smoothed
by a milky peace.

Once I met a musician there,
cello balanced on her chair,
a poet of notes and measures,
rhythmic idioms the punctuation
of her speech.

Melodies and metaphors
are life’s vanilla lattes,
all the mellower
for being so rare.

Oh, my goodness!  How did you get SO much beauty of every kind into one tiny poem?  I have already read this twice and sank deep down into it.  This is a keeper of keepers.

Like a favorite café brulé, well-balanced and welcome. However, there are premonitory rumblings here...

That musician's name wouldn't have been Christine, would it have?
