Work Day Three…Pen #1

It had been a long time
since she had traversed highways
just to obtain funds for survival.

Even longer since she was
That Girl, green eyes, long legs,
short skirts, blonde hair, in a
’78 Firebird, CB handle
reflecting her hair.

Now she’s This Gal,
silver hair glinting
under early morning highlights
eyes still green, panted legs still long,

but she remembers being 30, fondly.

Here she was again,
now and for the unforeseen
future, traveling a highway
just to obtain funds for survival.

Interstates are funny byways
and cruise control can keep one
just under K-dar, so she started
to pass the trucker in the silver-maroon
18-wheeler, noting his rear-views were tucked
on his truck just so that one could get
a good look of his handsome face,
and he, theirs…

It made her smile when he did,
and she waved, because that’s
what you do in the mid-states,
and when she passed him,
it warmed her the day through,
hearing that particular sound
of his truck horn. Now she
misses her old CB.

Tomorrow she’s going to drive
down that same road, only
with the sunroof open.

Lovely, Karilea!  It is lovely to be happy going to work.  I, too, have experienced that most days of my working life, but some more ecstatically so than others, as you did in this poem.

makes me want to check my mirrors more often
which way should I face them
to get that smile?
Remember that Hot Babe is still there
driving
