gilded memories like aviaries caged
stamp-swollen signets of harbingers lost
reality descending lower in the abyss of recall
as if shades of gold could alter perception

we think, therefore, we were
in ocular opulence pristine
as thinking outpaces existing
and things that never were

over-ride things that should have been
and memories exhaust elation
simply by wearing glitter-dust
worn generously with rose-filtered specs

proving that which could have been
is far more exciting than that which was

so true is your final line in this one...a profound and finely written poem...enjoyed it!

There must be a poem in here somewhere.

I love this and its very apt title.  Your take on the favourite RenĂ© Descartes quote is interesting and effective.  However, despite the fact that the could-have-beens may be more exciting, the that-which-was makes us what we are and our understanding of the could-have-beens allows us to gild our memories with beauty and wisdom, as you have done (yet again) in this poem.  Thank you for again making poetry out of pain.
