called him elmer to his face usually
or mc'crotchity ‘e' more often
when he was trying to line up his favors
to exchange for some sipping jack dan
or a twenty dollar seegar for pleasure

to make his lung cancer get angry
he would say between coughing
and the geezusdammit hope I die upstairs
so the coinner boy has to carry me down
and get his roids all a burnin', he'd grin

turned in expenses for needs and such
trimmed the fallout in his hair brush
with nail clippers, called it a haircut
worth fifteen down at the style and dye
or a pint of gentleman jack and some gum

county never questioned his enthusiasm
when keeping his books or filing claims
said he knew the governor by the first name
and carved him ducks from pine wood logs
left them at his cabin during the holidays

he never knew gov was dead, or I was his son

What a fantastic portrait Dark, especially loved this - I could almost see the stains on his teeth!

Ah, yes indeed -- the crusty old gentleman (he's probably knock some teeth out of my mouth if her heard me call him a gentleman -- put an image in my mind of some of the characters Jack Palance play as he grew older. Nice work.
