church pews filled to the brimming
I sat scrunched up on the last row
1952
trying to hide
thirteenyearsold
revival
summertime in Arkansas
preacher screaming at us
called the unbaptized of the flock heathens
spewing spit and salvation
Holy Bible in one hand
the other hand clenched
above his head
as though
to strike down the ungodly
hot and stifling in that church
air conditioning
no
preached hell and damnation
forever
then came the singing of the hymns
I come to the Garden alone
preacher bounded from behind the pulpit
marched up and down the aisle
beseeching sinners to turn their lives over to Gawd
I scrunched down
back row
somehow his eyes found mine
then he was there
death grip on my arm
drigging me down the aisle
praying over me
I was saved
so he said
I was just scared to death
got home
after church
mother made me burn all my comic books

I got saved in a scary way too, and even got a darn video of it

didn't know it would be on TV for everyone to see

Sue 'em! Just kidding, but the high pressure salesmanship of many of the evangelists in this country are almost criminal. And it is ALL about them and how many "souls" they can claim they have saved. Thanks for stopping by and relating, passing shadows.

I did a short stint as a Jesus Freak in high school.  So I know about extremes and the fear of God and Hell as "sales tools".
Good write!

Yes indeed, Lori, fire and damnation gets a young mind plenty worked up. Thanks.

...I come to the Garden alone

Sometimes, when I hear some of the old
Gospel songs, I wonder of them...did you
ever stop to think just "why" He wanted to
be away from the masses so often?

Sometimes, people can be a real pain...

Good stuff, Jerry. I've got some church stories too, but not this good.

love the last line...

the god I know not only loves comic books, but has such a sense of humor I thought I was a Goddess for awhile.

Appreciating your recovery Jer.

I imagine your church stories will have a bit more substance than mine, do Sunshine. Thank you.

I have a feeling you are still a goddess, serenity, and thank you, my recovery is plodding along.

NO need to go back to '52. I can show you that scene right now in North Carolina! You describe it well.

I am with Serenity and Balladeer on this one – except for the goddess part, hee hee.  In my humble opinion, although I regard myself as a Christian (not because of me, but because of Christ), fake and/or overzealous Christians (especially leaders) with an agenda are more scary and creepy and sickening than murderers.

You capsuled what I meant my poem to portray, Owl. Thank you.

You DID portray it - and in a much more effective way than I did.  I was agreeing with you.  Smiles.
