Whatever happened to barefoot boys?
Who played with frogs and snails-
And pinched the girls and made them cry
And pulled their pony tails?

Full of glee and mischief
No call for an alarm-
"For boys will be boys". you know-
They really meant no harm.

Spit balls in the home room class-
Fights behind the gym-
Monkey bars, and basketball,
And hanging from the rim.

Beer oft bought through the back door
Smoke to show you're cool!
Softball game down at the park-
Friday after school.

Gone forever are the days-
When childhood was a game-
When life at school could still be fun
Is Hollywood the blame?

Perhaps it is, perhaps it's not-
But this much seems too plain,
With all the children packing guns-
Our world is not the same.

Johnny has a Ruger "nine"
And Bob a thirty-eight-
Jimmy has a 12 guage pump-
And Daryl just can't wait...

For Daddy's going out of town-
Oh, wow! Hey, man alive!
Mama's watching videos-
I'll get the .45...

Kids with guns....and they can shoot-
I wonder what's in store-
When self defense is taking down
The kid who lives next door.

Scary, but true in far too many cases.  However, I hope there are still some of the "old" kind left.

My new puppy has chewed through my power cable.  I hope I can get one today, but may not be able to get one until Wednesday, if at all as my laptop was bought in 2007.

I don't have much battery power left and I need to try to save some battery power left to send the messages to Linda (Earth Angel) from my thread in Announcements every day, if at all possible.

Just explaining why I possibly won’t be able to respond to any poems for a while after a couple today.

This is just too real, John. When I was growing up my father always had guns in the house and my brothers and I were taught to use them (safely) but we never thought of shooting anyone. We didn't even use them for hunting. I don'nt understand what is happening these days.

This is very true and an excellent write.

I'd like to know what the real effect is on kids that play video games for hours where they're blasting someone's brains out graphically every minute of those hours.
One has to admit they're realistically graphic and addictive.
Is it the parents?
Or like this poem asks Hollywood's new acceptance of brutal graphic violence?

Young people are so impressionable and many easily swayed in their thinking.

It's still fun for those in the very early  grades, when play is still allowed and kids can be kids.

Lawsuits/ the Me world..I want it now/ technology to some extent/ and the Moral disintegration of many things: movies, clothing, magazines, the fascination with Hollywood and sports fame and the acceptance of so many behaviors that wouldn't have been tolerated by  parents of a few generations ago. Adding to that the disintegration of the family.

It is amazing what the schools must provide today that families use to years ago. From breakfasts to after school care.
