Looking back is a gift
It's a soul vibe digested
It's a purge-
regrets, loves, might have been loves, mistakes
and beyond the panic-
a chance to wonder what might have been
If only I woulda coulda shoulda
It's a pearl in the rescue of the mind
looking for that special swarthy native
to smile on one's inner delight.
It's a time to taste the honey of youth
long passed but burst out laughing.
It's a spiritual encounter
With the conscience of relevance
nagging at the door.
It's a time to reach back and touch the love
you thought would last forever
that blast of completeness,
the euphoria of mating with another heart
one that kills you with emotion and forced maturity.
It's a time to wonder
pros smother your cons with your self esteem.
It's a time to realize
you're not all bad no matter what you've done
and a time to cry openly and freely
in your own room alone and
thank God you've been blessed
with the happiness of giving to someone
a piece of yourself that's helped them
through the bitter and the sweet.

No, you're not all bad and looking back
you've crushed the sin of humanity
Just simply being you.

Really love those opening lines.  Your entire poem is reflective of life as we knew it, growing up.  I think we're almost there, but as I understand it, we never stop learning, and perhaps there will always be regrets, we just learn to accept imperfection....I guess.

Wonderful poem, ethome~

Eric this is stunning!  So full of wisdom, maturity, inspiration, comfort, simplicity, complexity, compassion and all bound together in solid Eric-sincerity.   I love it.

Ah. Here we are, looking back. What I especially like about your writing, Eric, is that somewhere within the write there is always a ray of sunshine among the gloom.

"you're not all bad no matter what you've done."

I don't know how long it took you to understand that simple, but righteous fact, but it took me until last October. That's a long time, man.

You combined the past with some mature wisdom and the result is a wonderful poem which will I will save to come back to.

The strongest lines....

quote:
the euphoria of mating with another heart

Wow, Eric....
It's wonderful finding a diamond,
even knowing that at one time,
one might have been the coal.

Damn Eric, sorry no other way for me to say this but that was awesome writing, true writing at its finest...and I agree that looking back is definitely something we all need and should do from time to time. You touch on what it is to be human, flaws and all...and yet with an openness that most of us wouldn't dare to touch.

"Looking back is a gift" ...love your take on this...someone once told me that you must look back to see ahead (and though I didn't understand what he was saying at first), I have learned the truism he was giving...your write reflects that valuable life lesson...thank you for sharing

One of the best pieces of writing I've seen come from your pen, Eric, and there have been many.

Looking back isn't always bad. It shows we really didn't know everything; we just assumed we did. Although, on a side note- I'm STILL convinced I CAN FLY
I like Eric the Philosopher too. Enjoyed.
