Janus, two-faced  Roman God laughs at us,
then shows us a face that just wants to fuss.
Bequeathed to all, the art of trickery,
we refined it, now can lie with much glee.

Bring on the mirth and put on your clown face,
today's sweetheart was another's embrace.,
Men with their toys to discard when they choose,
Women play the games, with their own sad ruse.

Politicians we all know have the knack,
to make the voters feel like a sad sack.
Smile and kiss the babies is their forte,
it's just a ruse to see how the land lays.

Someone you have known for all of your life,
will have no problems in stealing your wife.
No matter if she loved you to excess,
she can walk off and leave you in distress.

Do-Good priest behind his pulpit does preach,
and gives us the Golden Rule in his speech.
After church is over, behind the pews,
he fondles your son like it is his due.

We all possess this trait, I am afraid,
into two-face conversations we wade.
Over the well-known back fence we will lie,
to our neighbor and never tell them why.

Is it because of original sin,
which makes us look at our friend,  lie and grin?
Or is it basic nature to survive,
that causes us to smile as we connive?

I have no answer for this trait of ours,
we're all guilty whether peon or czar.
When a person says that he you can trust,
watch that dagger in the back he will thrust.

Jerry, thanks for pointing the finger at human nature and not just "them" or "those people". Very thoughtful write, I concur.

There are no "them" or "those people," Lori. We all need to glance in the mirrow from time to time.

Thank you . . .
