There Came A Knocking

That first night
wanted to drown out the sounds
of next door
and fill my emptiness
as I listened to the rhythm of
The Tell Tale Heart
wrapping myself up tightly,
occasionally quilt covering my eyes
with my favorite memories brought from home...
just a touch of familiarity
on this particular night, while
waiting for that knock
at my door...
a late night date with Edgar
and heard the cawing of his Raven.
Lasted well into the dark,
so exhausted was I
that sleep eventually came
as I rested in his words
and awoke to chills
as he brushed past me
and disappeared
into the early morning hours...

Upon the secretary...
There, lay hand scribed
a note

My Dearest M,
I shall meet thee, evening next
Where starlight shall pale
Upon thy presence.
Come drifting through
The garden gates of wrought,
In my darkened silence I await
Lips to sing their melody,
Hazel eyes, to cast their spell of hold
A gentle being, carrying her basket of dreams
Petal by petal, scenting me
In soft-murmured memory of truth

Ahh...My Heart, My Lonely Spirit
Lies in wait...
Leaving me trembling
In my bed of thoughts...

Framed in mind, the morrow and thee

Edgar

You have just outdone any poem written about Poe, or with him in mind. Edgar Allen Poe has touched many poets through the years as he penned the lines of his wretched (for the most part) life.

Saving this.

Jerry, I once visited Poe's childhood home in Richmond to meet several other poets from around the world from another site. Spending the weekend nights alone with the tv having only Poe movies to watch till falling asleep... this was my dream.

p.s. I also remember "Annabel Lee" as being my first poem ever having to memorize in school and years ago attended a wedding that had a reception in the catacombs where Poe is buried in Baltimore.

The Ravens are the football team of choice around here (living on the line between two states.)

Ahh...your Poe blessed you as surely
as Rilke has my own thoughts.

Enjoyed this, Maureen!

Maureen

I can't think of anything to say at except you're an exceptionally clever poetic school teacher!

So that's it....

Poe is one of my favorite poets. I am sure he would be honored to read this.

A perfect tribute on Poe's birthday, but I'm sure you knew that. Enjoyed!

Once again I thank everyone for indulging me of late...since I seem to be questioning a few things in my life.
