THE TEACHER
30 October 1999

In untamed but ordered thought
I, yet again, wrap my excitement
for these
and those
and them
in chosen paper
and blending ribbons.
Some thank their great-aunt for the handkerchiefs,
some are too busy to wonder at its shape
and others were expecting their first car.
But if there is even one
who spontaneously
tears open the parcel
to see if her gift can fly,
the price
is not too high.

Thank you, Jerry.  The rewards of inspiring even just one pupil, when I was teaching, were great.

This is beautifully written. I love the way you talk about giving in this piece.

You are so right, Diana, and there is always that one (and sometimes more) that you remember forever.

Thank you, Steaven.  Yes, I suppose that would be giving – of one’s heart and soul.

Thank you, Julie, for your kind words.

Thank you, Eric.  I love your quote  . . . but I don’t think Earnest does.

Yes, Ida, and I remember them with gratitude for accepting with joy, the gift I offered and flying high with it.
