he struts across
the plaza parking lot
like he was mr. universe
proud as hell to
be the cattle egret
that he is

his appearance is
flawless except for
the perpetual grease spots
on his back from slipping
under parked cars looking
for bugs and lizards to eat

this is his fourth winter here
and i feel compelled to
name him something
charlie seems to suit him
though he won't to this day
answer to anything he's called

Cattle egrets are like that, faith, they are a bit haughty and standoffish. The way you describe him and his bravado manner I'd call him Mr. T.

That's a perfect name for him!  I love it!

I love this, Faith and you had me hanging on every word.

Mr T suits him to a T!  And giggles at Jerry's description of Mr T's family.

My car is called Gretta.  She is a Jetta.  However, I didn't call her Gretta because it rhymes with Jetta.  The first time I saw her, she had 2 egrets near her and I thought egret - gret - gretta and instantly she became Gretta.  It was only days later that I noticed that Gretta rhymed with Jetta.

Funny how we become attached to animals like that. They become a familiar part of our lives we look forward to...and can't help but name.
