those sunday afternoons along the new river
could have been plastic with poison
but our cigars only improved the scent
and the view according to mona at the bar

mexicali by morning we would slur slowly
tipping our jacks back into backpacks
with glocks and distance tools too
for the hunting trip evenings we dreaded

just a minute men, she would say softly
as she leaned her brown bosom down into view
and gave us each another flavor of kiss
as if goodbyes were her favorite procession

but she knew she would see us again monthly
as our faces changed but our mission remained
sifting the sand for dreams that fell asleep
and became bones before fulfillment arrived

when just the minute men were godless padres

(scribblenote: brawley ca is 30 miles above mexicali mexico..dirty desert, bone yard of broken dreams...new river flows from the salton sea, toxic and poluted..but the beer is always cold at mona's resturant and bar)

Brought to mind a little cozy place n Juarez which used to go by the name of "Copa de Oro," and was owned and operated by Romelia. Ten cent Tacate and nickel shots of rot-gut tequila. The charm. The charm of the place. Actually it was pretty darn rough, but it was <>our place.

"when just the minute men were godless padres" . . . Gotta love it . . .
