I found him
half dead under a bare-limbed tree
blood seeped from his face
whimpered with every breath
somebody'd hurt him bad
he eyed me
as I approached
tried to growl
gave it up
just lay there looking through half-closed eyes
wondering if I was going to hurt him
too
I sat beside him
said, "What’d the other guy look like?"
pulled out a bottle
of Sweet Lucy
took a swing
stuck my finger in the bottle
sloshed it around
wet with wine I put my finger under his nose
he looked like he could use a drink
out came a red tongue
tried to reach my finger and whimpered
lay his head back down on the ground
I patted him gently
talked to him
told him all he needed to know about
me and those I used to know
he seemed interested
I cupped my hand
poured some Sweet Lucy into it
stuck it right under his mouth
he lapped it up
slowly
crying some when the hurt got bad
between Dog and I we killed that bottle
a creek was nearby
I filled the bottle with water
fed him cheese and crackers
they come in little packets
kinda had to force it down him
we stayed under that old tree for days
I went to town once
panhandled enough to buy him some ground meat
me some Sweet Lucy
took over a week
before Dog was able to jump that south-bound freight
with me
nobody else cares about us
except
Dog and I are best friends forever

Love this tail! The hurt and forgotten is painfully clear as is the healing bond.

I absolutely adore doggies! Its so sad when people just abuse and then abandon them.
Lovely story, both found a friend. Enjoyed.

I suppose you could say that I was ill while I was gone, latearrival, but I am back. Thank you for your very nice comment, and you are correct dog lovers would never allow a mutt like that to die alone.

i am a dog lover so your poem was especially moving and meaningful for me...most of the dogs i have had during my life i rescured from one sad situation or another...when you take in a dog under those kind of conditions, the dog never forgets it and you have a true and devoted friend for life...

your poem has reminded me of all of the love i have received from the wonderful dogs i have had the joy of taking care of...

your accompaning photo was perfect for the poem...

i applaud you...great poem!

There must be a poem in here somewhere.

Thank you so much, faith, When I get messages or comments such as this from a person I can feel truly loves dogs (animals) it is a joy unbounded. Dogs (with the possible exception of pit bulls) are the most loyal species in the world, or that has been my opinion. Thank you again, faith.

I realised that from the beginning that this was probably not a true story, but inspired by the photo you found, but nevertheless I sobbed my way through the whole thing and am still sobbing for all the true stories it represents, and even more for those doggies and other animals whose stories don't have such happy endings, and in gratitude for those humans such as you and the man in the photo and the other dog/animal lovers who replied and those out there who haven't even heard of Pip but who love and rescue animals.  I "get" every animal I have ever met, but sadly I struggle to understand most people.  My kitty went to Heaven in October 2010, my doggy went to Heaven in December 2009 and my horsie went to Heaven in April 2002 and I am in pieces about all of them.  I only managed to take on a new kitty and doggy on 31 December 2010 - saved them both from being put down, incuring a huge vet's bill that I will have to pay off for innoculations, neutering, medication and conditioning, but money is no object where my babies are concerned and fortunately I have a vet who will let me pay off what I owe.  When my horse was on Earth, I used to drive about 50kms to choose 2 bales of hay myself (I knew what he liked and would only allow him the best of that) and pick up his food at the same time (I couldn't fit more than 2 into the various hatchbacks I had over the 20½ years I had my horse) and 2 bales didn't last long so I had to make those trips often.  Sorry, I am rambling - I do ramble especially when I talk about my babies.  Thanks for your very beautiful poem.

No, it wasn't a true story, Owl, but it was true to my heart. I have been taking in strays and unwanted dogs primarily most of my life. Nothing as magnificent and dedicated as you I have to admit. I just hate to see dogs, well, any animal suffer, because most of the time they are pure victims in their suffering, because all they want to do is spend their lives being kind and obedient to their masters.

Thank you so much for the baring of your heart, Owl, on this terrible tragedy that happens frequently.

EVERY taking in of a stray or unwanted animal is magnificent and dedicated (ask God or the precious stray or unwanted animals).  Animals have no sin.  Any bad traits an animal has, was forced on him/her by humans.

In my first teaching post about 3 hours’ drive away from home, I was boarding with a woman who fed her 2 dogs on scraps.  I used to keep food for them in the fridge next door.  She had promised to give one dog to a young couple who were animal lovers for the wife's birthday.  Shortly after that she was going to give the other dog to her farmer brother who I could see was going to treat him badly.  So I STOLE the 2 dogs and took them both to the young couple where they both had a wonderful life along with a dear little cat the couple had.  My fiancé and I became firm friends with the 5 of them.

Reminds me of Jerry Jeff Walker's 'Mr. Bojangles'
I know, I know, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sang it but Jerry Jeff wrote it. That fact is very important! Because of the content of course.

Heartfelt touching story Jerry, companions that need each other for the duration.

Here in Eastern Canada there was a woman lived on and old farm in the country. People would leave/abandon dogs at the mouth of the road where she lived.
As you know people can be cruel and basically left them there to fend for themselves.
She took them all in and at one point had 150 dogs on her property. She really loved them. However, conditions started to become unhealthy as she was older and couldn't look after them properly.
The government stepped in and took them all away from her. It was a sad day in the news as she loved all of those dogs dearly.
Shortly after she died.........Sad how some things work out.

Never apologize for giving credit to the very talented man, Jerry Jeff Walker.

The helpless in the animal world and how some people treat them is really on my list. It takes a great person to go through life treating animals like they do. Michael Vick has been the showcase for the mistreatment of dogs and he, in my opinion, should have never been allowed to go back to earning his millions.

The lady you brought up in Canada is a hero to me. I have never been in a situation where I could do something like her, but I have a feeling if I were I would, because I've drug homeless dogs into my care many times over the years, one or two here and there. Most beautiful and smartest dog I ever had I rescued from running the streets in Texarkana, Arkansas was a German Shepherd II named Princess.

Thank you Eric, for your kind words.
