Listening to every heart

0 posted 2011-01-01 09:15 PM

I should have stayed longer…

How do I wring a moment
into a poem
when I am not sure
if I should even begin?

People look at me, askance,
“are you sure?” and I think
yes, I am
as I was forged for this
unknown practice,
although beneficent of all of it
prior - by birth, love, marriage
and friendship.

By death, a promise.

To give, as she, and all
Before, had given me.
Moments, Life, Living, Love.
She and others had known me, well.
And here I am, holding a stranger’s hand.

Touching her shoulder, giving peace?

That [oh lord I pray] I provide comfort;
Talking [oh lord I pray] soothing words;
Wondering how…then knowing a heart’s
Strike….bingo. Pinball. Score.

You are here for me.

So I cried for the lady I touched
For the first time yesterday, though
She knew not my name, nor my face,
Nor my goal…except to let her know

I am here, for you.

I went to visit her today…
But she had passed only hours
After I left yesterday,
Hopefully, for a brief
moment, knowing
She was not alone.

I should have stayed longer.

Wonderfully soul-searching write. This whole life/death arrangement leaves a lot to be desired. We tend to, one and all, leave our earthly remains in a state of horror and total fright. Modern medicine gives us longer life and dulls the horror of our suffering somewhat, but there comes a time when our eyes must see what is facing us and the pain is so intense we merge into it all wholly and welcoming death's cold fingers.

I am sorry, Sunshine, for getting a bit carried away. I am also sure that she felt there was someone there for her that cared and that made her transition more peaceful.

When early morning quietness seeps into my being
it's like I'm being hugged by everything good in the world.—August 16, 2010

This is so perfect for where I am right now - in time, I'll share it with one of my dearest friends.

Love you and wishing you a happy 2011.

Such a heart touching and well written poem, Karilea.  I think everything in life is as it's supposed to be so with that thought in mind, you stayed just as long as you were supposed to.

No need to stay any longer your heart was still there.
Loved the reality of this.

Beautiful, dear Karilea. She went home enriched by your trusting smile and your warmth.

Your gift of heart and time was perfect. As was the duration.

Love,
Margherita

You are good poets, to read, and respond...
and I will do it again, tomorrow.

Love, Write, Give....and then give some more.
